Chaos is consuming all of us, some faster than others.
Chaos is a byproduct of entropy.
Entropy is the gradual decline of order. This is the state the world naturally has a tendency to head to.
Mastery is the only antidote to this.
Mastery requires consciousness.
It requires you to get off your ass and take control of your life.
not tomorrow, not next week, TODAY.
Mastery is your journey to purpose and meaning.
Mastery is a dedication to your life task.
Along the journey to mastery, one will learn relentless focus, discipline and consistency.
Before you achieve mastery, you must find your life’s task.
What does that mean?
It means that you find a skill or subject that you have a profound connection to. Your desire to learn more about the skill needs to transcend the skill itself. It should almost feel religious.
Mozart didn’t just love music; it was connecting a voice to an array of emotions.
Einstein wasn’t necessarily obsessed with physics; he was obsessed with finding out the invisible stuff moving around in the universe.
It can take years to find your strengths, but usually early in life you will recognize breadcrumbs.
For me, I hated school. It was too structured, way too long, and too many subjects every day.
I failed most classes except English, which I aced all the way through senior year.
When I got immersed in a book, I loved it. I enjoyed writing essays and answering questions around short stories etc.
I never paid attention to this interest though, I thought English wasn’t “cool” and didn’t pay.
This is the chaos confusing me. I didn’t have the knowledge or tools available to know that this was a signal of my strengths, and to follow them.
I ended up finding my dad’s old diploma, which was a computer science degree, so I decided I was going to embark on a journey to learn math & software.
I knew there was money in tech, so even though I hated it, I forced myself to go to a community college and work my way up to university where I studied Computer Science for a few years.
I chased the money, and a burning desire to feel “Good enough” because of my short comings in public school.
I survived it for some time, but it was pretty awful forcing myself to do something I hated.
I was focusing on my weaknesses and hanging around people that were naturals. They enjoyed taking things a part, writing code, and learning algorithms etc.
I couldn’t stand it.
I eventually landed an IT job and slowly branched off into different areas until I found something I did enjoy, which was IT consulting. I have been doing that for 3 years now.
I don’t necessarily enjoy the subject cyber security, but I love teaching it.
What is the point here?
It is that I could have acted on my strengths early on. I spent years working on my weaknesses, math and software, only to prove to myself I could do it.
All of that just to become mediocre at my previous weaknesses when I could have been an amazing writer.
It took me 10 years to finally find something I was good at and enjoyed.
The teaching part was very rewarding. I knew I was getting close to my life task.
I eventually continued to branch off further into finding my purpose reading and writing.
And here I am, right back to my original strength and interest back when I was 12.
It feels fucking great.
For the next 7 years I will be on an apprenticeship to achieve mastery.
7-10 hours usually equates to 10,000 hours. This is what is required for mastery.
Mastery is consistency.
Mastery is ruthless focus.
You practice when you aren’t feeling well.
You practice when you get shit sleep.
You become so good that they can’t ignore you.
The reality is, when you truly find your life task, sharpening the sword becomes EFFORTLESS because of the dopamine your brain produces when you pursue it.
Your drive will be insane.
Competition dissipates when you create a daily, consistent, habit of ruthless focus and dedication to your life’s task for a decade.
Most people won’t do this for 3 months.
The goal is to always chase mastery in your strengths, and make sure you have a profound connection to it.
This can come at any age.
You can always make your way back to what you had a connection to and begin the journey of mastery.
Call this your life task.
Most will never find this. Most will never look for their life’s task with intention.
They will accept the chaos and let entropy choose their destiny.
They are too consumed by distractions and get stuck in complacency.
Every day you sleep in, don’t hit the gym, don’t study skills, don’t pursue your life’s task, is a day your FALL BEHIND.
There is NO stagnation in life, ONLY decay.
Time moves linearly, whether you like it or not. Because of this, if you aren’t progressing, you’re falling behind.
We have to create our own order in this life. If you stand by and let things happen TO YOU, chaos will take its course and it will choose everything FOR YOU.
This is how people end up at a dead-end job, resenting their manager, with no autonomy or meaning.
It’s how they end up with a miserable home life.
Their wife resents them for never chasing mastery and finding their life’s task. They are a dull, grey version of what their potential was.
They didn’t take the steps needed to curate their environment to acquire the life they want.
In order to win the game of life, and find purpose and meaning, you must work towards your life’s task and ruthlessly pursue mastery.
It might be when you’re 12, 32 or 55, but when you find it, you will know.
Double down and never look back.
